Tip #6: Church
Get involved, get more involved or stay involved in your own local church. If you don’t have one, find one. It’s imperative. Volunteer for something. Shock the socks off your church staff and say: “I want to get involved. How can I volunteer now?” Find out what your spiritual gifts are and use them inside and outside the church walls. You can do this on the ELCA website at www.elca.org. Also get connected with others in the church. Say “Yes! Yes, Lord, here I am.” After my divorce 16 years ago I became withdrawn and depression started setting in. My therapist gave me some great advice. He said to just say yes to every invitation I received. I said yes to dinner out. I said yes to bowling. I even said yes to contra dancing! I said yes to things in the church, too, like serving meals at Wheeler Mission. The depression lessened and saying yes helped so much.
So say yes to church – to worship. Get fueled up at church so you can go out and serve others – to take action in the world. You may have heard the illustration of people being like cars. Cars won’t go if we don’t take them to the gas station to get filled up. It’s hard for people to get filled up, fired up, for God’s work in the world without getting filled up in worship with the bread and wine, body and blood of Christ, and God’s word being poured into them every week.
We can “commune” with God in nature, in our home and at other places; however, there is something “catchy” when you find the right church and get involved. They become your family. We recently had a family who moved here from North Carolina - no family in the state and no close friends, yet. The dad ended up in the hospital. The mom was in her third trimester with two little ones at home. When the church found out about it, they jumped into action providing meals, driving kids, babysitting, prayer and more. Get involved in a church to worship God and serve others by being God’s hands and feet in the community.
Restaurant #6: The Libertine
Okay so this isn’t a restaurant. It’s a great place to go after dinner. A quiet atmosphere for conversation and to enjoy a drink. A 21 and over place. It is under Pizzology which isn’t my favorite pizza place. Give me Bazbeaux’s anyday. The Libertine is a very fun place for drinks that are unique with a great ambiance.
