Notes of Hope

Maundy Thursday

March 24, 2016

Since I was young, I have always looked forward to Holy Week and all the special services.  Evening services always appeal to me.  There was something holy about being in the church at night.  Tonight is no exception.  I look forward to our worship service at 7pm when there will be a special drama about the Last Supper, when we will have communion, and when the altar will be stripped and Psalm 22 read.  Takes my breath away a bit to think about it in anticipation of what will take place.

Maundy means “command” in Latin.  On this “Commandment Thursday” Christ served the first Holy Communion meal with his disciples.  The first “Last Supper” if you will.  They all sat around a table, and after the meal, Jesus took the bread and wine and commanded them to eat and drink of this for the remembrance of him and for the forgiveness of sins.

This meal is like all meals should be.  They should be about more than just the food.  Food is important as a relationship builder, as a means to draw people closer together, and as a part of sharing in each other’s lives. Imagine a meal, and maybe you have participated in some as I have, where the people sit around the table, eat the food and do not talk.  Imagine if Jesus and the disciples did that.  It would have no real meaning all these thousands of years later.

So, I encourage you, and me, to invite people over for a meal.  It doesn’t have to be elaborate and could simply be carryout Chinese or pizza. Spend the time sitting around a table eating and talking, sharing and getting to know one another more deeply. It’s amazing what food can do!
