The Stones +

The Rolling Stones.

Clint Eastwood.

Children's Games:  Hula Hoops/Hide & Seek/Jump Rope

These three have endured the test of time.  For decades upon decades these have been around and been popular.

As a teen I never liked The Rolling Stones.  I thought Mick Jagger was disgusting; however, as I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate their music, style and endurance.  Wikipedia says:  "The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. Active for over six decades, they are one of the most popular and enduring bands of the rock era."  At 81 Mick Jagger and the Stones appeared on 16 stages across the country this year.  Now that's endurance.

Clint Eastwood is just phenomenal, too.  He turned 94 this year and is producing and directing another movie after starting out as Rowdy Yates in the TV western “Rawhide”.  He went on to become world famous as the Man with No Name in numerous “spaghetti westerns”,  and then as “Dirty Harry”.  These roles, among others, have made Eastwood an enduring cultural icon of masculinity. Elected in 1986, Eastwood even served for two years as the mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.  My most favorite movie of his is “Gran Torino”, set in Detroit, of course.

Then there are those children's games that are still thriving; and, all of which, I enjoyed as a child.  Of course, new games have come along, and video games run rampant; but, most kids still enjoy hula hoops, hide & seek and jumping rope.  All of these began decades ago.

People, institutions, and things that endure get my respect.  There are several passages in the Bible about endurance.  One that doesn't get too much play is found in 2 Peter 1:5: “For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness. and godliness with mutual affection and mutual affection with love."  Endurance appears enough times in the Bible to know that it is important.

So!  Let's endure!
