Ginger

One flavor that brings me a lot of comfort is ginger:

  1. Vernor’s Ginger Ale

  2. Newman’s Ginger Mints

  3. Starbucks Iced Ginger Golden Drink

All bring me comfort and joy.  So, today I was overjoyed when on my daily walk I found the Starbucks inside the downtown Kroger open.  And they had my ginger drink!  I generally only treat myself to Starbucks on pay day; but this great find needed to be enjoyed today, a day early, as all the other Starbucks downtown are closed.

A small thing that brought a lot of comfort and joy as I walked home in the very brisk, sunshiny weather.  It brought to mind a carol I used to play for my father, “God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen”, which says:

God rest you merry, Gentlemen,

Let nothing you dismay,

Remember Christ our Savior

Was born upon this Day.

To save us all from Satan’s pow'r,

When we were gone astray:

Oh tidings of comfort and joy,

Comfort and joy,

Oh tidings of comfort and joy.

The tune starts with a prayer asking God to keep us prosperous and out of harm’s way, that being the original meaning of “rest you merry”. Then comes the reminder that our real comfort and joy comes from Christ our Savior.  The words “let nothing you dismay” do certainly seem appropriate now.

Think about Jeremiah 31:13-14 that says:“Then young women will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow”

Especially for those who sorrow, may they find comfort and joy in Christ our Savior!  So, let us not dismay over our current situation, but find that same comfort and joy in Jesus.  Pray that we all be kept out of harm’s way and give thanks for our prosperity…..and a Starbucks ginger drink that reminded me today of Christ our Savior!  Now that all is real hope!
