Real Silk Hosiery

As I walk along Massachusetts Avenue near my home, there is a most intriguing side alley.  So intriguing that I stopped there on today’s walk. As you approach the alley, you smell the scent of roses.  One smells this faint, floral aroma before you get to its origin. There is this beautiful grate, a picture of which I have posted, that is the genesis of the lovely smell. The smell literally goes before me!

This ornate grate is part of Indianapolis’ Cultural Trail and commemorates the Real Silk Hosiery Mill that used to be adjacent to the spot.  The scent is there to recall former days when smells like that were associated with luxury, as were the silk hosiery made nearby.  The scent is always in the air.  It never leaves.  As far as I know it has never gone out.

In Deuteronomy 31: 8 we hear these words of hope:  "It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

Good words to commit to memory at this time.  Possibly to use as a mantra when we hear things that might be disturbing.  Like the rose smell on my walk today, God is always with me.  God is by my side, yet far enough ahead of me to pave the way.  What hope!
