Tip & Restaurant #2
The second to last tip to stay closer to Christ and second to last favorite Indy restaurant of mine.
Tip #2: Serve
When I directed a youth group in Livonia, MI, my daughter Shannon was in high school. She attended most things, but she really tried to never miss a service event whether it was doing the fall “Rake ‘N Run” or making homemade caramel corn and taking it to the local firemen, or preparing a meal for Ronald McDonald’s House for the families there. She was generally the first to sign up. We talked about this, and she said there were a couple reasons she really enjoyed the service projects. First, she got to know the people in the group better when they all were a little uncomfortable together. Second, while working they talked more and shared more. And, third, she got more out of serving than she knew she could ever give to the people she served. She loved hearing their stories and accomplishing something for someone else.
It is the same with us. God has called us to serve someone – to serve God through serving others. There is a quote some attribute to St. Francis of Assisi, but it doesn’t seem like it belongs to him from my readings. The saying goes: “Share the Gospel and when necessary use words.” Last month I gave a sermon on loyalty and dogs. A dog never utters a word (perhaps a whine or a yip or bark); but through their actions, we know that they are man’s/woman’s best friend.
As Christians we are called to be loyal to others, to serve others; but we can speak, and it is important in our serving that we do use words to tell people about God’s love for them and that is why we are serving. It may be the only time they hear the Good News. Without the words it is simply a good deed that anyone can do. With the Gospel words, it is an act of service to God. So serve and tell others!
Join me at Wheeler Mission serving a meal.
Help someone out to the car with their groceries.
Look around your neighborhood, see what needs to be done, and just do it.
While doing it, use your words (as I often hear parents telling their toddlers today) to tell others why you are doing it. Share God’s love in actions AND in words.
#2 Indy Restaurant I Enjoy - Not in a true top 10 fashion. I enjoy them all!
Subzero. Located at 427 Massachusetts Avenue. This is not a restaurant as such. It is the coolest place to get ice cream, frozen yogurt or frozen custard. It is literally made before your eyes using liquid nitrogen. Each serving is completely customizable from the base to the mix-ins. Check out their website at http://www.subzeroicecream.com/ and let me know when I can meet you there!
